Nollaig na mBan (pronounced null-ig na mon)

 Country of origin: Ireland (especially strong traditions in the southwest, like County Cork and County Kerry)

Traditionally, Irish women bore the brunt of the holiday season’s cooking, cleaning, and family hosting. Nollaig na mBan was the day when women rested and men took over household duties. Women traditionally gathered with friends for tea, cakes, or a pint at the local pub, celebrating together and marking the close of the Christmas season.

While some of the old customs have faded, the day is still celebrated! In modern times, groups of women gather for lunches, teas, or special events, and restaurants and tearooms host “Ladies’ Day” specials. It’s become a day to celebrate women’s friendships and contributions.
